11+ Tutoring in Milton Keynes

One-to-one 11+ preparation with a friendly local tutor, in person around Milton Keynes or online. I’m Tom: BSc Psychology, Enhanced DBS checked.

The 11+ tests skills that simply aren’t taught at school, which is why so many capable children find it daunting at first. My job is to change that: we build the techniques step by step, at your child’s pace, so they walk into the exam feeling calm and prepared. No pressure, no cramming, just steady, confident progress.

Sessions usually run 45 minutes to an hour, depending on what your child needs. In-person sessions start at £45, and online sessions cost a little less.

I tutor in person across Milton Keynes and Buckinghamshire, and online anywhere in the UK.

The 11+ in Milton Keynes: what families need to know

Milton Keynes doesn’t have grammar schools of its own, so most local families enter the Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test (the “Bucks 11+”) for schools such as the Royal Latin School in Buckingham and the Aylesbury grammar schools. Registration closes in the summer term of Year 5, and the test itself takes place early in Year 6, so it pays to plan ahead.

The test covers four areas, and I prepare children for all of them:

Verbal Reasoning

Word puzzles, codes and logic, the section most children have never seen before.

Non-Verbal Reasoning

Shapes, patterns and spatial thinking, taught as learnable techniques rather than tricks.

Maths

Core skills plus the speed and problem-solving the 11+ demands.

English

Comprehension, vocabulary and spelling, built up through reading your child actually enjoys.

How I prepare your child

Every child starts with a free, friendly assessment so I can see exactly where they are, what’s already strong, and what we need to build. From there, we work one-to-one through a plan made for your child, not a one-size-fits-all course.

  • Weekly one-to-one sessions, in person around Milton Keynes or online
  • All four test areas covered: Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning, Maths and English
  • Unlimited extra practice between sessions with my free Practice Hub, no account, no cost
  • Regular, honest feedback for parents so you always know how it’s going
  • Confidence built in from day one, I hold a BSc in Psychology and use Positive Psychology in every session

Wondering about timing? Most families start in Year 4 or early Year 5. I’ve written more about this in When should you start preparing for the 11+? and Is my child right for grammar school?

Common questions about 11+ tutoring

How much does 11+ tutoring cost?

Sessions usually run 45 minutes to an hour, depending on what your child needs. In-person sessions start at £45, and online sessions cost a little less. The first conversation is always free with no obligation. There’s nothing else to buy, practice materials are included, and my Practice Hub is free for everyone.

When should we start 11+ preparation?

Most of my students start in Year 4 or early in Year 5. Starting earlier means shorter, calmer sessions with plenty of time to build confidence, but if you’re starting later, don’t panic. Get in touch and we’ll make a realistic plan.

Do you tutor for the Buckinghamshire 11+ specifically?

Yes, the Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test is the exam most Milton Keynes families sit, and it’s the one I prepare children for most often. I keep track of registration deadlines and test dates each year and share them on my news page.

Are sessions in person or online?

Both work well, I teach in person around Milton Keynes and online, whichever suits your family. Some students mix the two.
