Why I’m Happy to Move Your Session This Week

England are through to the World Cup last 16, on the back of a Harry Kane brace against DR Congo, and they’ve drawn Mexico at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, in front of fans whose team hasn’t lost, or even conceded, on home soil all tournament. It’s arguably the toughest game England have faced so far, and it kicks off at 1am on Monday morning, UK time, live on BBC One and iPlayer. For most families, that means staying up right through Sunday night.

The government has extended pub licensing hours until 5am for it. There’s no official guidance telling schools what to do about kids running on no sleep the next day either. It’s been left to individual families and schools to work it out for themselves, which, if I’m honest, is exactly how I think it should work for tutoring too.

I’m supposed to be the tutor who tells you education comes first, routines matter, and nothing gets in the way of the September test. Most weeks, I’d say exactly that.

This isn’t most weeks.

England last won the World Cup in 1966, and they beat Mexico in the group stage on the way to doing it. Runs like this don’t come around every tournament. If England go out on Monday night, it could be years before we’re back here again. A missed session is nothing next to a night like that, cheering from the sofa with their mum, their dad, or their mates at two in the morning. I’d rather my students had that than a perfect attendance record.

So if you’ve got a session booked this weekend or Monday and this match is going to win out over verbal reasoning, just message me. We’ll move it. No fuss, no guilt, and definitely no charge for wanting to watch your country try to reach a World Cup quarter final.

If England get through, the quarter final is Saturday 11th July in Miami, kicking off at a much more sociable 10pm. Here’s hoping we get to have this conversation again.
