The Final Stretch: Why the Last Few Weeks of Term Still Matter

Key takeaway: The final weeks of summer term, and the holidays that follow, are one of the best times all year to start one-to-one tutoring – not just September. With less homework competing for attention, it’s easier to close gaps in areas like times tables, reading stamina, or exam technique before the new school year begins. For 11+ families especially, starting now builds confidence that carries through to test day.

We’re into the final stretch before the summer holidays, and if your house looks anything like the ones I visit each week, everyone is running on fumes. The uniforms are a bit more crumpled, the bedtime routine has gone soft at the edges, and the countdown chart on the fridge is doing a lot of emotional labour. That’s completely normal. It’s also exactly the moment worth paying a little more attention to, not less.

Teachers, in particular, deserve a mention here. By early July, they’ve spent ten months managing thirty different personalities, chasing missing PE kits, writing reports, running clubs before and after the bell, and still finding the patience to explain long division for the fourth time to the same child. They do this while also keeping half an eye on the ones who are quietly struggling and the ones who are quietly bored. Whatever your experience of school has been this year, the people at the front of the classroom have almost certainly given more than anyone sees. If your child has a teacher worth thanking before the holidays, this is a good week to do it.

It’s also, oddly enough, a good moment to think about tutoring, and not for the reason you might expect. The instinct is often to wait until September, when the new term brings a fresh sense of urgency. But the final weeks of the summer term and the holiday that follows are actually one of the best windows all year for one-to-one support. Term-time pressure has eased off, there’s no homework competing for attention, and a child who has been quietly falling behind in one area, times tables, reading stamina, exam technique, can close that gap without the added stress of keeping up with a full timetable at the same time.

For families with an eye on the 11+, this stretch matters even more. September arrives fast, and the children who walk into the new school year already comfortable with the format, the pace, and the habits that make a real difference tend to carry that confidence all the way to test day. Starting now, gently, over the summer, means test season never feels like a scramble.

You don’t need a child who’s behind to make good use of this time. A few focused sessions over the holidays can be exactly what turns quiet uncertainty into real confidence before the new school year begins.
